Americans with Disabilities Act - Technical assistance, information, checklists, and latest revisions to the ADA.

Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG) - Scope and technical requirements for construction that meets accessibility standards. If you have any questions about these guidelines, please contact Jim at the Homer office.

Social Security Administration (SSA) - Information on Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and work incentives offered by SSA.

Social Security Forms - Commonly used forms for applying for SSDI, SSI, for reporting income, and appealing SSA decisions. Includes a link that allows the download of Adobe Acrobat© Reader.

DisabilityInfo.gov - Provides a wide range of disability related information color coded for ease of accessibility.

National Council on Disability - The National Council on Disability (NCD) is an independent federal agency making recommendations to the President and Congress on issues affecting Americans with disabilities.

Alaska State Independent Living Council - Private non-profit that oversees development of the State Plan for Independent Living and oversight fo the state's CIL's. Site is temporarily down.

National Council on Independent Living (NCIL) - is a membership organization that advances the independent living philosophy and advocates for the human rights of, and services for, people with disabilities to further their full integration and participation in society.

Independent Living Institute - The Independent Living Institute offers resources for persons with extensive disabilities and develops consumer-driven policies for self-determination, self-respect and dignity.

Access Alaska - Independent Living Center serving Anchorage, Mat-Su, western Alaska, and Fairbanks.

Southeast Alaska Independent Living (SAIL) - Independent Living Center serving Southeast Alaska... including Juneau, Ketchikan, and Sitka. The Center also houses Outdoor Recreation and Community Activities (ORCA).

Independent Living Research Utilization (ILRU) - A national center for information, training, research, and technical assistance in independent living.

Directory of Centers for Independent Living and State Independent Living Councils - Maintained by the ILRU and updated weekly.

Research Information on Independent Living (RIIL) - Improving access and use of research information by people with disabilities and other non-researcher stakeholders involved in the independent living, disability rights, and rehabilitation fields.

Independent Living USA (ILUSA) - Eclectic site with too many subjects to catagorize.

Association of Programs for Rural Independent Living - (APRIL) A national network of rural CIL's and other organizations and individuals concerned with the unique aspects of rural independent Living.

Alaska Job Center Network - Job information, career information, and resources.

Alaska Division of Vocational Rehabilitation - Providing vocational services to individuals who experience disability.

Alaska Works - Alaska Works is a statewide initiative, which exists to remove barriers to employment for people with disabilities who receive public supports.

U. S. Department of Labor and Training Administration - Employment resources for both job seekers and employers.

U. S. Department of Labor/Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP)- More employment resources from the Department of Labor.

Small Business Administration - Resource for those thinking about self-employment as a vocational goal.

Small Business Development Center - Providing small business owners with business planning services, marketing information, and counseling.

Kenai Peninsula Economic Development District - Providing small business planning service, business incubation services, and "gap" loans for the small business owner.

Job Accommodation Network - Cooperative site between the U. S. government and the University of West Virginia providing information about reasonable accommodation in the workplace.

Civil Rights Legislation

Americans with Disabilities Act - 1990 Civil Rights law defining discrimination based on disability as a violation of Federal Law.

Rehabilitation Act of 1973 - Provides for the formation of State Divisions of Vocational Rehabilitation, Indpendent Living Centers, and State Indpendent Living Councils. First mention of people with disabilities as a separate and distinct class or group of Americans. The law prohibits discrimination against persons with disabilites by entities receiving Federal money... state and local governments.

Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) - Provides for the education of children with disabilities in the most integrated setting appropriate to their needs.

Fair Housing Act - Prohibits discrimination based on disability in housing rental and sales. The act contains accessibility requirements for new residential construction.

Client Assistance Program (CAP) - Can help if you feel you are not being served by the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, Independent Living Centers, and Alaska Native Vocational Rehabilitation programs.

Disability Law Center Increasing the understanding of rights and responsibilities of consumers, legal professionals, service providers, families, and advocates throughout Alaska.

United States Department of Justice Disability Rights - Primary goal is to insure the rights of individuals with disabilities through the implementation of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund - Advocating for the rights of people and families with disabilities since 1979.

American Disabled for Attendant Programs Today (ADAPT) - Grass roots organization that organizes protests, rallies, and marches in support of disability friendly policy.

Disability Rights Advocates (DRA) - A non-profit legal center dedicated to protecting the civil and human rights of people with disabilities throughout the United States and the world

Steven Gold - Philadelphia based attorney whose practice is exclusive to the rights of people with disabilities. The web-site has information relating to housing, the ADA, Medicare, and other subjects.

National Organization on Disability (NOD) - The mission of the National Organization on Disability (N.O.D.) is to expand the participation and contribution of America’s 54 million men, women and children with disabilities in all aspects of life. By raising disability awareness through programs and information, together we can work toward closing the participation gaps in all aspects of American society.

Disability World - A bi-monthly web-zine of disability news and views.  

American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) - Is the largest national nonprofit cross-disability member organization in the United States, dedicated to ensuring economic self-sufficiency and political empowerment for the more than 56 million Americans with disabilities.

Dimenet - An effort to meet the Federal mandant that CIL's maintain a peer-to-peer information network. Here is the link to their archive of disability related news stories.

Mouth Magazine - Voice of the Disability Nation. This is the only national print magazine dedicated to disability issues. Mouth is published bi-monthly but they do maintain a web-site with archived previous stories.

Ragged Edge - Online successor to the print magazine "Disability Rag." Articles and writing about disability and disability concerns by involved individuals. The site contains a link to sign up for a free e-mail newsletter.
