For most of us, living independently is not a new concept. We take it for granted; we choose where we live, work, and play. It is, however, less than thirty years since that concept became associated with people who experience disabilities.

"Individuals with impairments can best make their own decisions about their lives. The only handicaps they face are societal attitudes and physical barriers, not the impairments they experience".

The Kenai Peninsula Independent Living Center is a non-profit organization run by persons with disabilities for persons with disabilities. Our primary goal is to assist persons with impairments to live as independently as possible in their own homes and in the communities of their choice.

Independent Living Center offices are located in Homer, Soldotna, and Seward Alaska. We provide direct service to the entire Kenai Peninsula and outreach service to Kodiak Island and the Valdez-Cordova region. Contact any office for more information.

Picture of Ed Roberts
Ed Roberts is considered, by many, to be the father of the modern Independent Living Center. He was the first Executive Director of the Center for Indpendent Living in Berkely Californina. There are now over 400 Centers and Satelite Offices, based on Ed's model, in the United States.
